Official link : Unicode Consortium

Unicode is developed by the Unicode Consortium, but happens in consultation with the ISO that works on ISO/IEC 10646.
Unicode is a characterset that tries to provide a unique number for every character, no matter what the platform, no matter what the program, no matter what the language.
It's development started in the beginning of the 90s. The current version is Unicode 13 (released Mar-2020)

There are several encoding methods developed for this character set. See UCS and UTF for more information.

More info on how to use or implement unicode in the different operating systems, check my HOWTO unicode page

The unicode consortium has developed a Unihan database which you can use online : search Unihan database. Detailed information about this database can be found in Unicode Standard Annex #38.
